Parts and Working Principles of Radial Drilling Machine

Radial Drilling Machine is used to drill the holes in the given radial distance so that the component size is larger in terms of height with respect to the work table. When the workpiece is large, it cannot fit arranged in the Machine vise. Therefore, the component/workpiece has to be placed on the ground and the Radial arm of the drilling machine has to be rotated with respect to the component/workpiece to do the operation.

Parts of the Radial Drilling Machine

The Parts of the Radial Drilling Machine are as follows.

1.      Base

2.      Column

3.      Table

4.      Electric Motor

5.      Radial Arm

6.      Drive head

7.      Drill spindle

8.      Chuck

9.      Drill Bit

10.  Work Piece

An explanation for the Parts of the Radial Drilling Machine;

The explanation for the parts of the Radial Drilling Machine is as follows.

1. Base

It is made up of cast iron which possesses good wear and high compressive strength resistance. The base is used to provide the assembly of parts on it and also absorbs the vibrations induced by the machine parts.

2. Column

It is exactly located at one end of a bed which can act as a help for rotating the radial arm 360 degrees.

3. Table

The machine vice is connected to a swivel table that can hold the workpiece for further operations.

4. Electric Motor

The motor is present at the top of the drill head, which drives the horizontal axis.

5. Radial Arm

This is the part that is attached to the column. This part can rotate 360 degrees around the column. The face of the radial arm is accurately machined, and the head slides over it. This arm moves up and down the column. In larger machines, hydraulics are used to move the arm up and down.

6. Drive Head

It generally consists of two levers which by varying can increase or decrease the speed of the chuck.

7. Drill spindle

It is a part of the drilling machine that carries the equipment of the drilling machine and is responsible for its rotation.

8. Chuck

One end of the chuck is linked to the spindle organization and another end is connected to the drill bit (tool).

9. Drill Bit

The drill bit act as a tool for drilling the holes in the specimens.

10. Workpiece

If the workpiece is small then it can be placed on the swivel table else it can be placed on the ground such that the radial arm is used for drilling purposes.

Working Principles of Radial Drilling Machine

When the power supply is given, the spindle rotates which was in conjunction with the motor. The Radial arm is adjusted with the types of operations and height of the workpiece. The spindle is associated with the chuck and the drill bit is placed between the jaws of the chuck.

The Drill head is adjusted onto the workpiece and an apposite feed is given. Then the drill bit drives into the workpiece very easily.

Drive Mechanism (Rack and Pinion Mechanism)

When the hand wheel is revolved, then the Pinion which is attached to the rack also revolves which can convert the rotary motion to linear motion the driving mechanism is called as Rack and Pinion mechanism.

Advantages of Radial Drilling Machine

·         The Advantages of the Radial Drilling Machine are as follows.

·         Radial Drilling Machine is advanced compared to the Bench Drilling machine.

·         With the help of its radial arm, it can able to drill holes in the components which are larger than the space between the drill bit and the worktable.

·         Works efficiently on different metals and wood materials too.

·         The worktable can be rotated 360 degrees.

·         It shows High Accuracy and Precision.

Disadvantages of Radial Drilling Machine

The disadvantages of the Radial Drilling Machine are as follows.

·         They are large machines and take up a lot of real estate.

·         It has been designed for large to medium workpieces.

Applications of Radial Drilling Machine

The applications of the Radial Drilling Machine are as follows.

·         They are used in industries for the massive production of components.

·         They are used in Educational Institutions for performing lab experiments.

·         They are used in Large and small scale   Industries too.
